It can be especially hard during the transition from summer break, back to school. The truth is, kids need sleep to be successful during the day. Below is the ammunition you need to reason your way through this battle to a peaceful resolution. One tactic that can be successful with children is taking time to explain the reasons why the body needs to sleep. Here are four important things that happen while children sleep. 1. Repair muscles and rejuvenate the body for the next day- if sleep is cut short the body will not feel rested and strong. 2. Memory consolidation- time to organize and process the information collected throughout the day. 3. Growth- the body releases hormones during sleep that regulate growth. 4. Digestion- the body burns off toxins and completes digestion from the day while it sleeps. If the body does not have time to do this toxins may start to build up and gastrointestinal problem may begin to surface. Below is a chart developed by Wilson Elementary in Kenosha, Wisconsin to help determine if their students were getting the proper amount of rest. Age is listed on the column on the left, wake up time across the top and bed time beneath wake up time. You may be surprised to learn that a 5yr old still require 11.5hrs of sleep per night and a 12yr old is not yet an adult who can sneak by with 7hrs, they still need 9.45hrs. Keep in mind every child is different. If your child is showing signs of being tired (irritable, cranky, irrational) you may want to increase their sleep beyond the recommendation of the chart. The bottom line is that kids need a night of uninterrupted sleep to leave their bodies and minds rejuvenated for the next day, and it is our responsibility as parents to make sure that it happens. If sleep is cut short, the body doesn’t have time to complete all of the phases needed for muscle repair, memory consolidation and release of hormones regulating growth and appetite. Then we wake up less prepared to concentrate, make decisions, or engage fully in school and social activities. It breaks the 8-12hr fast from last night’s meal and kicks the body’s metabolism back into work mode. Research shows that kids who eat a healthy breakfast complete with whole grains, fiber and protein have improved concentration and performance in the classroom. Kids who eat a healthy breakfast are also more likely to participate in physical activities and maintain a healthy weight through life. Kids who skip out on breakfast are more likely to be irritably and moody and to be mentally distracted by mid-morning as their energy and blood sugar levels crash. This is also true of children who eat a breakfast high in sugar and processed carbohydrates. Eating breakfast starts the body’s metabolism, the process the body uses to convert the fuel in food to energy the body can use, in other words, burning calories. Food with little national value does not burn for long, and leaves these kids in a similar state as those who skip breakfast all together. Providing a healthy breakfast made of whole grains, clean protein and fiber is not as easy as grabbing pre-packaged muffins and a brightly packaged yogurt product and kissing our kids good bye. A well balanced breakfast requires reading and understanding food labels and potentially, a little extra time in the kitchen. Many of us grew up checking food labels for calories, fat, protein and carbs. These are good things to check for, but even more important is reading the ingredient list. Many pre-packaged foods are full of chemicals used to pro-long shelf life and add flavor/color, not ideal for growing healthy kids. In addition to noticing ingredients, it is also important to look at information on grams of sugar. Many kid yogurt products for example contain half of the recommended daily allowance of sugar for a healthy kid diet. Kid cereal can be even worse with high sugar, low nutrients/ fiber and low protein levels. (It is recommended that kids have 24g of sugar or less per day, American Heart Association and World Health Organization) Here are a few quick healthy breakfast options for the whole family: • Whole grain toast, egg and fresh fruit • Banana or apple with nut butter on whole grain toast • Yogurt parfait (plain or vanilla Greek yogurt, fruit of choice, low sugar granola) • Oatmeal with fruit (fresh or dried), crushed nuts, cinnamon and milk • Fruit smoothie with whole grain muffin, toast or pancakes • Whole grain pancakes, waffles and muffins with fresh fruit. (I make mine in large batches and freeze for weekday convenience). • Whole grain, low sugar cereal with milk and a side of fruit • Low sugar yogurt with a side of fruit and whole grain baked good There are many more options then the ones provided above. Here are a few tips to keep yourself and your family healthy during the school year and beyond. 1. **Wash Hands- often** Bacteria lives on fingertips, and research shows that adults touch their face, mouth, eyes and nose about 16 times and hour. Kids might touch their nose and eyes for the entire hourJ Hands must be washed on a regular basis to keep germs off and out of the body. Hands should be washed with soap in warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds, about the time it takes to sing the Happy Birthday Song. 2. **Exercise** There are many reasons to exercise on a regular basis. It is recommended that children and adults need 1hour of physical exertion daily. Benefits of physical activity include increased heart health, increased capacity for learning, helps control weight and prevents chronic disease, builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints, reduces stress and anxiety, and increases self-esteem. This means getting your heart rate up and your body moving; running, jumping rope, soccer, and freeze tag are all good examples. It is unknown exactly why exercise reduces ones risk of getting sick, but research suggests that consistent exercise gives the immune system a boost and may create more germ-fighting cells in the body. Another possibility is that exercise lowers stress hormones in the body that can weaken the body’s ability to fight off sickness. One thing that is known is that adults and children who exercise on a regular basis for 60min a day are less likely to get sick. 3. **Eat the Rainbow** Fruits and vegetables are full of nutrients called antioxidants that build up the immune system. Each color has a role that it plays in good health. Foods that are yellow, orange, purple or blue are especially helpful in keeping the immune system strong. For optimum health, eat a diet complete with a wide variety of natural whole foods. 4. **Sleep!** Something we all love but few of us get enough of, sleep. Researchers found that adults who sleep less than 6 hours a night are about four times more likely to catch a cold when they get the virus compared to those who get 7 hours of sleep a night. Children require even more sleep, think 10 or more hours per night. Though there are no guarantees that doing all of these things will keep you and your family free from the sniffles, it is a good start. Often it can be tempting to let them watch TV or play video games while we parents do more “grown-up things” like chores or work. But scheduling 30 minutes or more a day with our kids without distractions can be much more valuable for both you and your kids then giving them a few distracted minutes here and there throughout the day. Whether this time is after school, in the evening or over a long holiday break, here are a few suggestions of ways to have fun with your kids. 1\. Go Outside! You don’t need a plan, just go. If it is cold bundle up so no one complains and goes running back inside. If you have a swing set, use it; a trampoline, jump; if you have access to woods or fields go explore, if you live in a neighborhood go for a walk. Make a nature collection or nature art, play tag or basketball, build a fairy village or a fort. Often it is better to walk outside with our children without a plan, so that we are free to be in the moment and let our children lead the way. 2\. Play. Again, no need to have a plan, but here are a few suggestions just in case your kids need help. Play school, I have found letting my children be the teacher in this game is very informative. You may learn more about what they are currently working on at school, the flow and schedule of their day, behavioral expectations and consequences. Not to mention, one of the best ways for our children to learn is to teach. Other suggestions include board games, puzzles, dolls, Legos, play-doh, coloring…the options are as endless as you and your child’s imagination. 3\. Practice yoga or have a dance party. There are many benefits to having a home yoga practice, first and foremost you can share it with your family. The benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, strength, and balance. Including breath work and meditation with a home yoga practice also helps reduce stress and create more clarity in the mind. Yoga can be fun and playful. Dancing is also a great way to get the family up, moving, laughing and interacting. Everyone can pick a favorite song, choreograph a routine if they’d like, make it competitive or collaborative. 4\. Cook or bake. Kids love to feel helpful and needed. Find a job in the kitchen suitable and safe for their skills. Pouring, measuring, chopping and mixing can be completed by young helpers while working over heat and with sharper utensils can be empowering for older kids. Let them help search for and plan a family meal or make a dessert. You can also include valuable lessons on nutrition while teaching your kids practical life skills for the future. No need to stop with the food, help them set a fancy table while teaching them good etiquette in the kitchen and while dining. 5\. Plan an outing. You don’t have to wait for the weekend to take a field trip. The library or the local playground can be a nice weeknight outing; take a jog or a bike ride on a local bike path or through the neighborhood. Find a nearby MetroPark or city park and go for a hike. Take your kids to a café and have them tell you about their day over hot chocolate or check out a local museum. But studies and research show that we are also wiping away the good bacteria that naturally help to defend our kids from sickness and super bugs. In fact, in September the FDA gave manufactures 12 months to remove all antibacterial soap ingredients from the market. The Food and Drug Administration says they do little or nothing to make soap work any better and said the industry has failed to prove they’re safe. Included in the ingredient list to be removed from products are triclosan and triclocarban. Triclosan is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent commonly used in pesticides and antibacterial soaps. Triclosan is known to create antibiotic resistant bacteria. When Triclosan is absorbed into the skin it enters the blood stream. Triclosan is known to cause various side effects like cancer, allergies, hormonal and neurological ill effects, muscle weakness and infertility. Using antibacterial hand sanitizer can have the side effect of increasing the body’s susceptibility to infection instead of protecting against infection. There is both a possible increase of antibiotic resistance and decreased ability to fight infection with continued use of hand sanitizers, according to Drug Watch. Using antibacterial hand sanitizers may actually be less effective than traditional soap and water according to Dr. Sarah Janssen of the Natural Resources Defense Council. It turns out the best thing we can do for ourselves and our kids is to use old fashioned soap and water. If you do use hand sanitizer for convenience, make sure to limit use to times when soap and water are not available. I mean, if your 7 year old is not playing on a select baseball team, or sits out of fall ball he’ll probably never make the high school team. If your 4 year old is not spending at least 6 hours a week at gymnastics, she’ll never get a scholarship, right? And what about a musical instrument, second language, scouts, 4-H…the opportunities for kids are boundless and as parents it can all be a little overwhelming. Listening to our kids and paying attention to certain behaviors can be the best indicator of when they are in rhythm with the pace of their schedules or when they are struggling to keep going. Here are 5 signs to look for that indicate when a child or family may need a break. ## 1. Is there time for school work? If homework, studying and reading have become something stressful because there are not enough hours in a day to comfortably fit it in, then chances are your child may have too many extra-curricular activities. Quiet, quality time for school work and reading should be a priority, as school is one area that will certainly impact your child’s future. If grades start to suffer then something needs to change. ## 2. Is sleep being compromised? Is bedtime getting bypassed due to late night practices, having to finish homework or trying to cram in a shower or nightly reading? If so, chances are there is too much going on. If kids are tired, feeling overwhelmed and stressed or falling asleep in the car, they probably need a break. (See Creating a Healthy Bed Time Routine Blog from July 2017 to determine how much sleep your child should be getting) If your 9 year old has a meltdown at the thought of getting up early on Saturday to go to Kings Island, because it is the one day a week she can sleep in…you have an overscheduled kid. ## 3. Does your child have down time? Do your kids have time to explore and play outside, is there time for their imagination to run wild with dolls, Legos and crayons, even the occasional video game or movie, and is there time for friends? Kids need time to recharge and distress, if there is not down time in their schedule, chances are it is too full. ## 4. Is family time being compromised? Research has shown numerous benefits to eating dinner together as a family at least 4 times during the week. Family dinners have been linked to a lower risk of obesity, substance abuse, eating disorders, and an increased chance of graduating from high school. If your idea of a family dinner is stopping at Speedway together a few times a week on your way to practice…chances are you are all overscheduled. In addition to eating together as a family there are many benefits to spending time together relaxing, playing, and even working to accomplish goals together. If family time is limited to carpooling, then it is probably time to re-evaluate the schedule. ## 5. Does your child enjoy what they are doing? It can be hard for parents to allow their children to stop, aka quit, an activity. But, if a child is overextended they may begin to feel like they are not able to focus and excel in activities they enjoy. Keeping children in activities they do not enjoy and are not excelling, can do more damage than good. Listening to our children and validating their opinions and desires when it comes to their activities and time can be more beneficial then forcing them to stick with an activity or sport that brings them down. It can also save a family money. Why pay for piano lessons for a child that refuses to practice, and why argue with your child to spend time with an activity they don’t enjoy? Life is too short to not enjoy the time we have together as a family. Every child and family is different. They had their state required testing last week and his teachers were so chill about it, he honestly thought they were still practicing. No test stress here!
